Spirulina and chlorella powders are among the most established microalgae ingredients in the functional food and dietary supplement sectors. Both are characterised by high nutrient density, a significant protein content and a wide range of technological applications.

Thanks to their natural colour intensity and nutritional composition, they are suitable both for innovative new products and for enhancing the functional properties of existing recipes. We stock both raw materials in conventional quality and in organic quality from certified organic cultivation.

Spirulina – rich in protein and vibrant in colour

Spirulina (biologically a cyanobacterium, but usually referred to as blue-green algae) typically contains 60–70% protein and is therefore one of the most protein-rich plant-based raw materials, which also naturally contains iron, beta-carotene, B vitamins (including vitamin B12 analogues) and phycocyanin (a blue plant pigment with antioxidant properties) as key components.

A distinctive feature is the intense blue-green colour, which makes spirulina powder of interest not only for its nutritional profile but also from a technological perspective. It can be easily incorporated into powder blends, tablets, capsules and dry or semi-solid systems.

Chlorella – a chlorophyll-rich green algae with a robust structure

Chlorella, also known as green algae, is a single-celled freshwater algae with a protein content of around 50–60%. Of particular note is its high chlorophyll content, which makes it a sought-after ingredient for “green” and clean-label concepts.

In addition to its high protein content, the typical constituents include protein, chlorophyll and natural antioxidant plant compounds. The robust cell wall structure is characteristic of chlorella and plays a significant role in its positioning within holistic nutritional approaches.

Scientifically documented properties of spirulina and chlorella

Scientific studies discuss the following effects, among others, depending on the dosage and the individual’s initial condition:

  • Contribution to iron intake in cases of deficiency
  • Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties
  • Possible beneficial effects on cholesterol and blood sugar levels (usually at higher doses)

The actual effect depends heavily on product quality, dosage and the target group. Any health claims are subject to the applicable legal requirements; we are merely listing individual points for discussion here.

Applications, storage, best-before date & packaging

Spirulina and chlorella powders are primarily used in dietary supplements (powders, tablets, capsules), functional foods, protein and superfood blends, smoothies and drink powders, clean-label product developments, and innovative colour and nutrient concepts.

The fine grind ensures easy dosing and even distribution in various applications. The product is typically stored in a cool, dry place away from direct light and has a very convenient shelf life of 36 months from the date of manufacture. It is packaged in a sturdy 25 kg drum.
